This Macro Photography Workshop at Tilligerry Habitat is part of the Crafted Image Academy “Art of Interpreting” series — workshops designed to help photographers move beyond settings and begin making deliberate creative decisions.
Most photographers begin by trying to make a small subject appear larger.
Stronger photographers learn to interpret its form, texture, light and surroundings.
Macro photography is not simply about magnification. The appearance of a subject is shaped by the equipment used, working distance, light direction, focus placement, depth of field and background.
During this workshop, we’ll compare several ways of photographing small subjects, including dedicated macro lenses, extension tubes, close-up filters and reversing a wide-angle lens. Participants will also have the opportunity to try selected equipment supplied during the session, including Nikkor 24mm lenses for reversed-lens macro photography.
We’ll then move beyond getting close and explore how continuous lights, diffused flash and a portable tabletop light box can be used to control the appearance of a small subject.
At Tilligerry Habitat, we’ll work with natural details found throughout the bushland and boardwalk environment — learning how to recognise overlooked subjects, control visual distractions and decide how each subject should be interpreted.

You do not need to own a dedicated macro lens or specialised macro-lighting system. Bring your camera and the closest-focusing lens you currently use. Selected lenses, accessories and lighting equipment will be available to try during the workshop.
Important
The subjects available at Tilligerry Habitat will vary with the season, weather and conditions on the day.
Flowers, fungi, insects, water droplets and other small natural details cannot be guaranteed. Learning to recognise and respond to what is available is part of the workshop.
Suitable natural materials may also be photographed in the portable light box to demonstrate controlled lighting, background isolation and subject presentation. Living subjects will not be removed or disturbed for this purpose.
The workshop is limited to six participants so everyone has time to use the supplied equipment, complete practical exercises and receive individual guidance.
Participants should wear suitable footwear and clothing for moving carefully through a natural bushland and boardwalk environment.

No dedicated macro lens is required. Selected macro accessories, reversed-lens equipment and lighting tools will be supplied for participants to try during the workshop.

How difficult is the location to access?
Tilligerry Habitat includes established boardwalks, paths and areas close to the education centre. Most of the workshop will take place in accessible locations, although participants may occasionally need to crouch, kneel or work close to the ground when photographing small subjects.
Do I need to be an experienced photographer?
This workshop is part of Refining Vision — The Art of Interpreting, designed for photographers who already understand core camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
The focus moves beyond basic technique to observation, focus placement, lighting and decision-making — learning how to recognise small subjects, compare different macro approaches and interpret them with greater control and intent.
What kind of photography will we be doing?
We will photograph small natural subjects found around Tilligerry Habitat, which may include leaves, flowers, fungi, textures, water droplets, insects and other overlooked details.
The emphasis will be on interpreting each subject through magnification, focus placement, depth of field, lighting, composition and background control—not simply making it appear larger.
Do I need to own a macro lens?
No. Bring the closest-focusing lens you currently own.
During the workshop, we will compare several approaches to macro and close-up photography, including:
- dedicated macro lenses
- extension tubes
- close-up filters
- reversed wide-angle lenses
- the close-focusing capability of conventional lenses
Selected Nikkor 24mm lenses, reversing equipment and other accessories will be available for participants to try under guidance.
Will lighting equipment be available?
Yes. Participants will be introduced to several ways of lighting small subjects, including available light, compact continuous LED lights and diffused flash.
Three SmallRig lights, a macro flash attachment and a portable tabletop light box will be available for demonstrations and supervised practical use.
Because the workshop is limited to six participants, everyone should have meaningful time to work with the supplied equipment.
Do I need to bring a tripod or flash?
A tripod or monopod can be useful for static subjects, careful composition and continuous-light photography. Handheld photography may be more suitable for insects or other subjects that move.
You are welcome to bring your own flash, LED light or macro accessories, but workshop lighting equipment will also be supplied.
What happens if the weather is poor?
Tilligerry Habitat has sheltered areas around the education centre and boardwalks, allowing much of the workshop to continue in light rain or unsettled conditions.
The portable light box and controlled-lighting exercises also provide useful alternatives when field conditions are less suitable.
If conditions become unsafe or unsuitable for the workshop, participants will be advised of any changes beforehand.

Do you provide equipment for workshops?
Participants are encouraged to bring their own camera and equipment wherever possible.
In some workshops, basic shared gear such as tripods or filters may be available to demonstrate techniques, but this will vary depending on the session.
If you are unsure what to bring, or whether your current gear will be suitable, feel free to get in touch before booking.
How long are the workshops?
Workshop lengths vary depending on the topic and format.
Most short workshops run for around 2 to 3 hours, while some sessions may run longer depending on the location, learning objectives, or shooting conditions.

What happens in case of inclement weather?
Photography often involves working with changing weather and light, and in many cases the session can still go ahead safely and successfully.
If conditions are likely to make the workshop unsafe or significantly reduce the planned learning experience, you will be notified as early as possible.
Where a workshop cannot proceed, you will be offered the option to rebook for a future session or receive a voucher, depending on the circumstances.
