Start Photography — No Experience Needed at Newcastle Ocean Baths
Christopher John
The Crafted Image Academy
This “Start Photography” beginner workshop at Newcastle Ocean Baths is designed for people who want to take better photographs without needing to understand camera settings first.
Whether you use a phone, compact camera, mirrorless camera or DSLR, you’ll learn how photographers recognise photographs, use light, and simplify a scene before pressing the shutter.
If you’ve been wanting to take better photos but aren’t sure where to start, this is where photography begins.
Most people focus on their camera.
Better photographers learn to see.
This session helps you understand what makes a photograph work — so you can recognise strong images, use light more effectively, and take more control of your results — without needing to understand camera settings.
This workshop takes place at Newcastle Ocean Baths, a visually rich coastal location with clean lines, open space, and constantly changing light.
It’s the perfect environment for learning how to simplify a scene and recognise strong photographic opportunities without overwhelm.
This is a relaxed, small-group session where you’ll be guided through practical exercises designed to help you see more clearly and build confidence with your camera.
You won’t be expected to understand camera settings — the focus is entirely on observation, composition, and simple technique.
Places are limited to keep the group small and the experience practical.
Book your place and start seeing your photography differently.

Hands-On Experience
You’ll be out photographing from the start — not sitting through theory or trying to memorise settings. We work in real environments, helping you notice light, simplify scenes, and understand what makes a photograph work as you go.
Guided, Not Overwhelming
You’ll be guided step-by-step in a relaxed, supportive way. There’s no pressure to keep up and no expectation that you understand your camera — just clear, simple guidance that helps things make sense.
Small Group Environment
Groups are kept small so you can ask questions, try things for yourself, and get individual support throughout the session. It’s a comfortable environment where you can learn at your own pace.
Learn to See Differently
Most people leave seeing photographs in a completely different way. You’ll start to recognise light, composition, and moments more clearly — so taking better photos becomes something that feels natural.
Christopher John is a professional photographer and photography educator with more than four decades of experience behind the camera.
Through The Crafted Image Academy, he helps photographers move beyond simply operating a camera and begin to understand how strong photographs are created — by learning to recognise light, composition, timing, and the visual relationships within a scene.
Christopher’s workshops are known for their supportive atmosphere, clear explanations, and practical guidance, helping photographers build confidence while developing their own creative vision.
At the heart of his teaching is a simple idea:
Great photographs are crafted, not captured.
Rather than focusing only on camera settings, Christopher helps photographers develop the ability to see photographs before they are taken — understanding how light, composition, and timing work together to shape meaningful images.
His workshops form part of the Crafted Image Academy learning pathway, helping photographers gradually move from understanding their camera to confidently crafting photographs with intention.
