Start Photography — No Experience Needed
Photography begins with curiosity, not technical knowledge.
Our Start Photography sessions are designed for complete beginners who want a friendly, supportive introduction to photography and cameras without feeling overwhelmed across Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter region.
Who these sessions are for
Your Photos Don't Look the Way You Expected
You enjoy taking photographs with your phone or camera, but often find the results don't quite capture the moment, scene or feeling that made you want to take the photograph in the first place.
You're Not Sure Where to Start
Whether you're using a phone, compact camera or interchangeable-lens camera, photography can seem confusing when everyone talks about settings, gear and technical jargon. These sessions provide a simple and supportive starting point.
You Want to Learn Alongside Other Beginners
Learning photography is easier when you're surrounded by people asking the same questions and facing the same challenges. These sessions provide a supportive environment where curiosity is encouraged and questions are always welcome.
Photography starts with the camera you already own
Whether you’re using a phone, compact camera or interchangeable-lens camera, these sessions are designed for people taking their first steps into photography.
During a Start Photography session you’ll explore a real location, participate in guided activities, learn simple ways to recognise stronger photographs and receive support as you build confidence with your camera.
No technical knowledge is required and there is no expectation that you already understand camera settings.
That would remove one entire section from the page and tighten the overall flow.
What you’ll discover
- Recognising why some photographs are more engaging than others
- Making better use of the camera or phone you already own
- Understanding how light influences a photograph
- Seeing photographic opportunities in everyday situations
- Building confidence through practical activities
- Exploring different ways of looking at a scene
- Learning simple techniques without technical overload
- Developing the habit of taking photographs more intentionally
Learn photography in real places, not classrooms
These sessions are held at relaxed outdoor locations across Newcastle, Port Stephens, and the Hunter Region, providing a friendly environment for people taking their first steps into photography.
Locations are chosen for their accessibility, comfort and variety of photographic opportunities, allowing participants to explore photography at their own pace while receiving practical guidance and encouragement.
Whether you’re using a phone, compact camera or interchangeable-lens camera, you’ll learn through observation, exploration and hands-on activities rather than technical lectures or complicated exercises.
Photography begins with curiosity, not technical knowledge.

Questions About Getting Started
Thinking about joining your first photography session?
If you're new to photography, you're not alone. These are some of the questions we hear most often.
I've never used a camera before. Is this for me?
Absolutely. These sessions are designed specifically for people with little or no photographic experience.
What camera do I need?
Any interchangeable-lens camera is suitable. If you’re unsure whether your camera is appropriate, simply contact us before booking.
Will I learn camera settings?
Yes, but only as needed. The focus is on becoming comfortable with your camera rather than trying to memorise technical information.
Will I slow the group down?
Not at all. These sessions are designed for beginners and questions are encouraged.
What happens after this workshop?
Most participants progress into our Camera Foundations workshops where we explore exposure, focus and camera controls in greater depth.
