Level 3 Advanced Astro Photography - Iris Moore Reserve
Iris Moore Lookout in Port Stephens offers a superb vantage point for astro photography, with expansive views over the bushland and coastline that open directly to the night sky. Elevated and away from the brighter pockets of Nelson Bay, it provides relatively low light pollution, making it ideal for capturing the Milky Way, star trails, and celestial panoramas. Its easy access and clear horizons make it a favourite spot for photographers chasing clean, atmospheric night-sky compositions.
Level 3 | Advanced Astro Photography
Mastering the Night Sky with Technical Precision and Creative Control
This Level 3 advanced astro photography workshop is designed for photographers who already have a solid working knowledge of night photography and are ready to move beyond capture into intentional, repeatable, and refined astro landscape creation.
This is not an introduction to astrophotography. It is a skills-deepening, decision-driven session focused on technical optimisation, creative problem-solving, and field-based execution under real night-sky conditions.
In this hands-on advanced session, you’ll work on:
Precision camera configuration for astro landscapes, including exposure optimisation, ISO strategy, and noise management
Advanced focusing workflows, hyperfocal strategy, and critical focus verification in the dark
Milky Way placement and timing, using sky knowledge and planning tools to align sky structure with landscape intent
Complex composition strategies, balancing foreground, sky weight, scale, and visual flow
Star motion management, including shutter length decisions, rotation awareness, and trail control
Problem-solving in the field, adapting to changing conditions, light pollution, and environmental variables
Capture decisions for post-processing, ensuring clean, flexible files for advanced editing workflows
How this Level 3 workshop works
Conducted on location under active night-sky conditions
Strong emphasis on independent operation with guided refinement, not step-by-step instruction
Instructor feedback focuses on decision-making, efficiency, and consistency, not just “getting the shot”
Peer discussion encouraged to surface different approaches, solutions, and creative intent
